Get Confidential - know your rights

This is a new section on the site. We hope that the following information will help to answer your questions. For more in depth information on these and other topics follow the link to the Brook website.

So….What are my Rights?

What is the legal age to have sex?
In the UK it is legal from 16 Yrs
In Northern Ireland it is 17 Yrs

Can I say NO to sex?
Lots of young people tell their friends they are having sex when they are not. Do not feel pressured to have sex with anyone, do it when you feel ready.

Who will tell who?
With matters concerning health all young people under 16 have the same rights to confidentiality as adults.

What about my school?
Schools have their own rules so don’t presume they can keep confidential information to themselves.

What is the legal age to buy condoms?
There is no legal age, anyone can buy condoms.

If I am under 16 can I get contraception?
Yes, but any health professional will want to make sure:

  • you understand what is being said and how the contraception works

  • you are doing what you want and not being persuaded by anyone else

  • your partner is a similar age to you

  • you have considered talking to your parents or another adult

  • you are likely to continue having a sexual relationship.

If he/she has concerns that you do not meet the above criteria they will talk about this with you.

Can I have an abortion without anyone being told?
Yes but you will have to see 2 doctors on separate occasions
who will talk to you about the situation They will want to know if you can talk to your parents or another adult. They have to be sure having an abortion is in your best interest. You will be asked the same questions in the receiving contraception section above.

What if I think someone has breached (broken) my confidentiality?
You have a right to complain. Ask at the clinic reception for a complaints form or follow the link to the Brook website on the right hand side of this page.
