Signs of pregnancy

If you suspect you might be pregnant, perhaps because you’ve had unprotected sex and your period is late, you should have a pregnancy test done right away.

Burying your head in the sand and ignoring the signs of pregnancy will not make it disappear.

If you are pregnant it's best to find out as early as possible. That way you’ve got time to think carefully about what you are going to do. For more information have a look at the I'm pregnant section.

The most usual early sign of pregnancy is a missed period. However, other signs include:

  • feeling sick

  • throwing up

  • having tingly, tender breasts

  • feeling very tired

  • needing to go to the toilet a lot more than usual

A few women don’t miss a period during pregnancy but the 'periods' that they have while they are pregnant are usually shorter than their usual ones.
