Here you will find the answers to some frequently asked questions from young people.
How do I know if I need help?
There are several ways;
firstly;
is your drinking or drug use is having a negative effect on your relationships with other people.
These can all be signs that you are becoming dependent on using something. You can call KCA Young Persons’ Service on (01227) 456 744 and get free advice, without giving your name or age.
What happens if someone calls this number?
We can just give advice over the phone, but if someone wants to talk about the impact that drinking or drugs is having on their life, we will be happy to meet face to face. You won’t have to come to our centre- we can meet you at a youth centre, or somewhere you feel comfortable. So we can arrange to meet you, we will ask some basic questions, such as how you would like to be contacted and what you would like to talk about. We can work together to plan how you would like us to help you.
We’ll ask you about what drugs you have been using, and how you feel they are affecting your life. We won’t judge, and we won’t force you into anything; the important thing is to explore the issues with you and show you the options available.
Do we tell people’s parents/carers?
People under 18 can meet us without their parents getting involved. However, it can be a good thing to tell your parents- although they may be shocked at first, it helps to be open about the issues and get some support from home too.
Do we tell the police?
No - we don’t automatically give information to the police about someone’s drug use.
What do young people get out of the service?
Lots of young people feel that they haven’t got anyone to talk to about their drinking or drug use. This is a chance to talk privately to someone who won’t be shocked or judge you, and who will have heaps of experience about drug and alcohol issues. They work with you so that you better understand your patterns of drinking and drug use and make choices that benefit you most.
What if I’m worried about a friend- what can I do to help?
If you’re worried about a friend’s drinking or drug use, you can always call KCA for some advice. We won’t ask for names, and we can give you free expert information. We can also help you to think about ways to talk to your friend.
