Here are some previously asked questions from young people worried that they might be pregnant.
Question
Does it mean am pregnant, because my period 6 days late???
Answer
Missing a period is a possible sign that you could be pregnant, but there may be other reasons for it. If you have been having sex without any form of contraception, there is a risk of pregnancy. If you have not yet started this late period, then you should go to your local family planning clinic and ask their advice, they may be able to do a pregnancy test for you.
Question
I had sex about 7 months ago and I haven’t started my period since then... does that mean I’m pregnant?
Answer
It doesn't mean that you are pregnant, but missing periods when normally you have a regular cycle is one of the main signs of pregnancy. You need to go and see a Doctor as soon as possible, because if you are pregnant it could be 6 to 7 months by now and you will need some antenatal care from a midwife. If you are not pregnant, the doctor may want to do some tests to find out why you are not having periods. Please go and talk to someone.
Question
I had sex 2 months ago without protection. I took day after pills about 36 hours after sex. And have had 3 periods till now, each around 3-4 days long and the bleeding was quite normal. There are about 26 days between each period. The last, one that I had, seems to be quite normal but it stopped on 3rd day after I took a shower, and after 12-13 hours it started again but this time the bleeding was so less, and continued for a couple of days and finished now. Is there any chance for me to be pregnant?
Answer
It doesn't sound like you would be pregnant from the time of unprotected sex 2 months ago if your periods have been normal, but if you have had sex since and something has gone wrong with your contraception then you may be pregnant from that. The simplest way to find out is to do a pregnancy test and then you will know one way or the other.
Question
Hi just wondering can semen go through material as not sure whether I’m pregnant because of this? Thanks
Answer
It depends on the type of material and how close together the weave is. It would be very unlikely, but if you are worried you need to do a pregnancy test if you have missed a period.
Question
I'm pregnant, I know I don't want to keep the baby because I'm only 16 and have just finished my GCSE's. The father knows about this and how I feel but the problem is that I'm too late into the pregnancy to take the morning after pill and I don't know where to start getting advice on abortions. Please help!
Answer
Hi, Well done, you have taken the first important step. I suggest that you go to the nearest family planning/young persons clinic as soon as possible, like today. They are very used to helping people in your situation and will be very kind to you. You could take your boyfriend with you or any one else who will be supportive. The clinic staff will listen to you, answer your questions and discuss all the options you have. If you tell the staff at the clinic reception it is an emergency and the website suggested that you attend you will be seen even if they have no appointments left. Good luck.
Question
I think I might be pregnant!
I need to get the morning after pill and I am scared to talk to my parents, I am scared they will hit me!
So what shall I do, go into a chemist and buy some or see my GP? Please help me this is a big problem and I don't know what to do? Help wanted.
Answer
It is really hard to be in this situation but there are people who can help you. The addresses of places where you can get the morning after pill are on this site, you can also go to your GP or any of the Young People's Clinics or Family Planning Clinics. When this is all over you may consider going to the young person's clinic to talk over what you have been through and get some advice on how to prevent this happening again. Most parents are caring and supportive in such situations even if they do not approve of what has happened but you know them better than anyone else.

The clinics available to you are free and are able to refer for a termination if needed. You will find details of your nearest clinic listed on this website or on the free 24hr information line 0800 0728748.
Question
Hello
I'm 17 and had sex for the first time 2 ½ weeks ago. The boy doesn't like using condoms so he didn't wear one. 1-2 days before I went to the GP to start the pill but was told I'd have to wait until I started my next period. I was totally stupid and had sex but felt relieved because I started bleeding straight away afterwards so I thought I'd started because I was due on, so I took my first pill. It turned out that I had not started because it was so little and it only happened once so he must have been too big for me. I felt confused and worried because I didn't know what I was supposed to do regarding the pill now I had taken one at the wrong time. I decided to carry on and stopped taking it 2 days ago so I could start my period. I haven't started yet and I'm very worried because I don't want to be pregnant! What should I do?
Answer
You should go back to your GP or go to the Young People's Clinic and ask them to explain how to take your pills correctly. You should also have been given an information leaflet with your pills that should help you to understand how to take them. Your bleeding after sex could have been due to your hymen (the skin that covers the entrance to the vagina in virgins) being broken by penetration.
If you have not taken your pills correctly there is a risk of you being pregnant and you should go to your GP or Young People's Clinic for a pregnancy test. You should also take extra precautions, talk to your boyfriend, and encourage him to use a condom.
Question
I was having dry sex with my boyfriend, while on my heavy days of my period. He had boxers and a pair of mesh lined, nylon pants on. I wasn't wearing any clothes. He was only on top of me rubbing against the top where my pubic hair is and not the mouth of the vagina. He ejaculated but I don't think it went through his pants. I didn't feel any wetness on me but I was wondering if I could get pregnant from that?
Answer
You are at a low risk of pregnancy as this is at the point in your monthly cycle that you are least fertile and that there is very little chance of semen penetrating your boyfriends pants. In future you are advised to use condoms before having any physical contact. If you are still worried you may be pregnant go and see your GP or a nurse at the Young People's Clinic for a free and confidential pregnancy test and you can also discuss your future contraception needs.
Question
Can you get pregnant when you have unprotected sex even if you are on the birth control pill but you recently were on medication that reduced the effectiveness. As well if you were on your period when you had intercourse. Thank you for your help.
Answer
Hi, you are absolutely right - you can get pregnant with any unprotected sex and some medication can affect some birth control. However, the up side is that having a period makes you less likely to be at risk. To be sure, either go to a young peoples clinic or your GP.
Question
I am quite worried. I have found a strange lump right inside my vagina and also in my stomach. When I pressed this it seems to move. A close friend said I was pregnant. Could this be so? My periods have been very light. I did a pregnancy test and this was negative so could I still be pregnant? Should I bother my GP with this? Or am I making a fuss over nothing?
Answer
If it worries you, then you are not making a fuss, just trying to get things sorted. As well as the GP you could go to your nearest young person's clinic or family planning clinic and don't forget this provides a confidential service and that what we are there for. If you have not had sex you will not be pregnant. You could go to this website's emergency section to find out the signs and symptoms of pregnancy.
